Age is not a factor in the ability to teach others something for which we have a passion. This story caught my attention as I was in the last group of students to begin their education in the last one-room schoolhouse in my childhood rural community.
Many great women leaders served as teachers in those tiny schoolhouses. Little could they have predicted the massive change they would see in their lifetime.(1)
2008-2010: number of people 55 + who joined Facebook – up by over 1,000% Computers for seniors - Isabella's way: Isabella Dryden teaches computer classes for seniors at Creative Retirement Manitoba. As a community center for senior citizens, this bustling organization strives to meet the needs of seniors in order to enable healthy aging into the 90s and beyond.(2) Listed first in their Values statement, is the following:
People in all of their diversity have the right of access to education across their life-span.
In Isabella’s words words, I think it's so important that people who retire have something to do to keep the brain active. That's so important." (3)
Computer classes for seniors: Driving Factors
No different than people in any other age group, the internet for seniors is a source of information, and a link to family and friends, old and new, and yes, even for finding new love. One of the growing reasons for increased interest in computers for seniors, is a desire to start using Facebook. Reconnecting with high school friends, and maintaining or even deepening connections with current friends and family is a strong motivator for the use of computers for seniors.
Isolation and Computer Learning for Seniors
For those of us working in healthcare, leadership and community service, it is clear that preventing or reversing isolation is a key factor in healthy happy aging. Isabella’s story highlights not only the amazing possibilities in this emerging field, but also brings to light the fact that seniors themselves are emerging as leaders for their own population group’s needs.
