The Making of a Great Leader

Golda Meir’s path follows that of the Dandelion Child. This is a term for children who have come through often incredible adversity, and grow to become high achievers, even in the service of others. (1) Her father had left the family behind, and come to America for work. From launching the American Young Sisters Society, to becoming a Labor Zionist with strong socialist values, and a career as a teacher, her natural leadership skills were obvious. Her and her husband moved to a kibbutz in Palestine in 1921, and helped create the Jewish homeland. She held the following leadership positions over time: officer of the Histadrut Trade Union, member of the Provisional Government, Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Minister of Labor, Foreign Minister, Secretary General of the new Labor Party. Upon the untimely death of Levi Eshkol (1969) she rose to Premier. She was 70: Golda Meir quote about this below :). And the rest is history.

• A leader who doesn't hesitate before he sends his nation into battle is not fit to be a leader.

• Don't be humble... you're not that great.

• It's no accident many accuse me of conducting public affairs with my heart instead of my head. Well, what if I do? Those who don't know how to weep with their whole heart don't know how to laugh either.

• Let me tell you something that we Israelis have against Moses. He took us 40 years through the desert in order to bring us to the one spot in the Middle East that has no oil!
