Great Women Leaders. Nellie McClung

Nellie McClung, recognized world-wide as one of the great women leaders great-women-leaders , is in a league of social visionaries rarely seen. Brilliant of mind and tongue and fuelled by her loathing of discrimination against women, she is responsible for one of the major positive changes in the history of women’s rights in North America. A powerful speaker with a sense of humour, her and her success serve as inspiration to many marginalized groups, world wide.

1873. Chatsworth, Ontario, Canada: Nellie McClung, destined to become a great leader among social visionaries, is born.

Number of Children: Nellie had five children with husband Wesley.

1904-1911. Becomes engaged with the women’s rights movement while living in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Political Affiliation: Liberal. Also considered a suffragette. (1)

Lesser-known Causes: she was a campaigner for equity in divorce law, temperance, chidren’s dental & medical care, rights of married women to own property, mothers' allowance and factory safety legislation, and the sterilization of those labeled simple minded. (2)

Cities of Residence: Chatsworth, Ontario. Winnipeg, Manitoba. Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta. Victoria, British Columbia.

Progeny Factoid: Nellie McClung was the grandmother of feisty John McClung, a well known Alberta Judge

1908. Nellie publishes Sowing Seeds in Danny, her 1st novel. It rose to best-seller status.

1916. First major success: through her efforts, and those of the 4 women who supported her, Manitoba gives women the right to vote and run for office.(3)

1921 – 1926. Served as Liberal member of Legislative Assembly of Alberta

1927. Nellie and her group launch a successful petition. The term Persons in the British North America Act, 1867 is re-defined in law to now include women in access to political office. What would she do today on Facebook?

2009. The Canadian Senate awards Nellie McClung and the Famous Five Canada's 1st Honorary Senators designation.
